The stage is set for a highly anticipated Lagos derby as Inter Lagos host Sporting Lagos in a clash that promises plenty of rivalry, bragging rights and early-season pressure in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The two newly promoted sides are scheduled to meet on Sunday, September 13, 2026, in Matchday 3, with both teams looking for their first points of the campaign. The NPFL has listed the fixture as Inter Lagos versus Sporting Lagos.
The encounter has already generated plenty of banter among supporters, with fans trading taunts on social media ahead of what is being billed as the first top-flight meeting between the two Lagos clubs in a decade.
Inter Lagos enter the derby under pressure after losing their opening two league matches. They suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Shooting Stars before falling 1-0 at home to Doma United.
Sporting Lagos have also endured a difficult start. They opened their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Doma United in Gombe, leaving them without a point after their first match.
However, the rivalry between the clubs is already developing its own history. The sides met in the 2025/26 Nigeria National League Super Four, where Inter Lagos defeated Sporting 1-0 through Bashir Hassan’s early goal. Sporting nevertheless went on to win the NNL title on goal difference, with both clubs securing promotion to the NPFL.
That previous meeting has added another layer to Sunday’s showdown, with both clubs now eager to establish themselves as the leading force among Lagos’ newest top-flight sides.
The derby also comes at an important moment for both coaches. Inter boss Shakiru Biodun Giwa will be seeking a response after back-to-back defeats, while Sporting will hope to put their opening-day setback behind them and kick-start their campaign. The NPFL had earlier highlighted the significance of the two clubs’ promotion and their return to the elite division.
With neither side having opened its account in the league, the encounter is more than just a battle for local bragging rights. A victory could provide the momentum either team desperately needs at the start of the 2026/27 season.
The recent history between Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos suggests that the latest chapter of the Lagos rivalry could be another fiercely contested affair.
