Lagos Floods Spark Celebrity Concern

Nigerian celebrities have joined thousands of residents in expressing frustration over the worsening flood situation in Lagos after fresh rainfall on Tuesday morning, June 30, 2026, compounded the devastation caused by Sunday’s downpour.

The persistent rain left several roads submerged, disrupted businesses, stranded commuters and intensified traffic congestion across the state. Floodwaters continued to inundate low-lying communities, with residents in parts of Ajah, Lekki, Okota, Amuwo Odofin, Mushin, Gbagada, Surulere, Oshodi and Victoria Island reporting severe difficulties moving around the city. Emergency officials also urged motorists to avoid flooded roads as more rainfall was forecast throughout the day.

Reacting to the unfolding situation, several celebrities took to social media to voice their concerns and sympathise with affected Lagosians.

Nollywood actress Cossy Ojiakor, whose home was flooded during the initial downpour, shared heartbreaking videos showing her apartment submerged in water. She revealed that neighbours helped salvage some of her belongings by placing furniture on top of her vehicle, while power was disconnected in the area for safety reasons due to the rising floodwaters.

Other entertainers and influencers also flooded social media with videos of waterlogged streets, stranded vehicles and overflowing drainage channels, describing the recurring floods as a major challenge for residents and businesses. Many called for urgent intervention to address the city’s persistent drainage and infrastructure problems.

The renewed flooding came as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a fresh weather advisory on Tuesday, warning residents of Lagos and other coastal states to brace for continued rainfall and a heightened risk of flash flooding throughout the day. The agency cautioned that sustained rainfall could worsen conditions in coastal and low-lying communities and advised residents to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.

The latest weather alert follows widespread flooding that began over the weekend, disrupting transportation, damaging homes and businesses, and forcing some residents to temporarily abandon their properties. Floodwaters also affected movement around several major roads, while long traffic queues were reported across different parts of the city.

Environmental experts have continued to attribute Lagos’ recurring floods to a combination of intense seasonal rainfall, blocked drainage channels, rapid urbanisation and the effects of climate change. They have repeatedly stressed the need for improved stormwater infrastructure, stricter enforcement against illegal developments on drainage corridors and responsible waste disposal.

As the rainy season reaches its peak, residents are urging authorities to accelerate long-term flood mitigation projects to prevent the annual destruction of property and disruption of economic activities. With NiMet forecasting more rainfall in the coming days, Lagosians remain on high alert as the city braces for further weather-related challenges.
