Tension Rises in Ilawe-Ekiti Over Alleged Vote Buying Claims

A wave of concern has swept through Ilawe-Ekiti as reports of alleged vote-buying activities during the Ekiti governorship election sparked tension among residents, party supporters, and election observers.

The situation reportedly created unease in some polling areas as allegations emerged that some individuals were attempting to influence voters through financial inducements. The claims have raised fresh concerns over electoral integrity and compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws, which prohibit the buying and selling of votes.

Security personnel monitoring the election were said to have maintained vigilance across polling locations, with authorities warning political actors and voters against engaging in activities capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.

Vote-buying allegations have remained a recurring issue in Nigerian elections, with previous Ekiti governorship polls also witnessing similar claims from political actors and observers. Reports from past elections in the state cited allegations of voters being offered money in exchange for support, leading to calls from civil society groups for stronger enforcement measures.

Election monitoring groups have consistently urged security agencies and relevant authorities to take decisive action against electoral offences, stressing that voters should be allowed to make independent choices without pressure or inducement.

Meanwhile, officials have continued to appeal for calm, urging residents of Ilawe-Ekiti and other communities across the state to remain peaceful and report any suspicious activities through the appropriate channels.

The Ekiti governorship election is being closely watched, with stakeholders emphasising the need for a transparent, peaceful, and credible process as voters exercise their democratic rights.
