Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a narrow 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Colombia in Łódź, Poland, on Sunday.
The Nigerian side appeared destined for extra time after holding Colombia to a goalless draw through 90 minutes, only for Valerin Loboa to break the deadlock in the second minute of stoppage time.
Loboa latched onto a through ball before seeing her initial effort blocked by goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma and captain Uzoma, but she reacted quickly to finish the rebound and send Colombia into the semi-finals.
The Falconets had created several opportunities during the match but were unable to find the decisive finish. Janet Akekoromowei came closest in the first half when her effort from the edge of the box struck the crossbar, while Tumininu Adeshina also forced Colombia goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo into a fine save.
Nigeria’s task became more difficult in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card, with the decision subsequently confirmed by VAR. Despite being reduced to 10 players, the Falconets continued to push for a breakthrough.
The defeat brings an end to Nigeria’s campaign after an impressive run into the last eight. The Falconets had secured their quarter-final place with a convincing 3–0 victory over England in the round of 16, with Tosin Rafiu, Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu finding the net.
Nigeria, two-time runners-up at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, will now turn their attention to future campaigns as they continue their pursuit of a first title at the competition.
Colombia, meanwhile, advance to the semi-finals after surviving Nigeria’s pressure and producing the decisive moment deep into stoppage time.
