Senegal on Tuesday scaled through to the 2022 Qatar World Cup after Sadio Mane scored the winning penalty in a shootout against Egypt.
It was a tough and interesting match that was extended to extra time and penalty which Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah missed.
The result after the final whistle triggered happy moments and celebration for Senegal while the Egyptians were left unhappy, especially one of the world’s best players; Salah who had thoughts of being in the global tournament in November.
Before the penalty shootout, the two determined teams played 1-1 on aggregate after extra time, in the second leg of the play-off tie in Senegal’s new 50,000-seater stadium finished 1-0 to the hosts.
Interestingly, the match was a repeat of the Nations cup which both teams played in the final and penalty shootout. Mane had netted the penalty which won the Nations Cup and the Reds forward scored from the decisive spot-kick once again.
Chelsea and Senegal goal keeper, Edouard Mendy also showed class after he had given Senegal an advantage by saving from Mostafa Mohamed at 2-1.
