Football legend, Lionel Messi has closed the door on one of the most extraordinary chapters in international football, announcing his retirement from the Argentina national team at the age of 39.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, 2026, through an emotional Instagram post, ending a 21-year journey that transformed him from a prodigious youngster into Argentina’s greatest-ever goalscorer and most-capped player.
Messi’s decision comes just weeks after Argentina fell to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The 1-0 extra-time defeat ended the reigning champions’ hopes of successfully defending their title, while also bringing the curtain down on Messi’s sixth and final World Cup appearance.
The Argentine captain revealed that he had already made up his mind shortly after the World Cup final. However, the death of his father, Jorge Messi, on August 8 further strengthened his resolve to walk away from international football.
“It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deeply — but I understand that the time has come,” Messi said in his farewell message. He added that he had always given everything for Argentina and wanted to leave the national team knowing he had done all he could.
For much of his early international career, Messi’s relationship with Argentina was marked by frustration. He endured painful defeats in major finals and even announced his retirement from international football in 2016 after Argentina lost the Copa América final to Chile.
But the story eventually changed dramatically.
Messi went on to lead Argentina to the 2021 Copa América title, the 2022 Finalissima and, most significantly, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He also guided the team to another World Cup final in 2026 before Spain ended their title defence.
His numbers tell the scale of his contribution. Messi leaves Argentina with 207 appearances and 125 goals, both national records. He also scored 21 times at the World Cup and became the first player to win the tournament’s Golden Ball twice.
His international career began in 2005 and spanned six World Cups, multiple Copa América campaigns and some of the most memorable moments in Argentina’s football history.
For Messi, however, the journey was never simply about statistics.
After years of criticism and near misses, he finally delivered the trophies Argentine supporters had desperately wanted. The 2022 World Cup victory, in particular, transformed the narrative around his national-team career and cemented his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
Messi’s international retirement does not mean the end of his playing career.
The superstar is expected to continue playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, with his contract running through the end of the 2028 season.
After more than two decades, Argentina must now prepare for life without the player who carried its colours through triumph, heartbreak and redemption.
Messi leaves the national team not merely as a champion, but as a record-breaker, captain and symbol of an era that changed Argentine football forever.
