Lampard, Terry Recall Tears After Mourinho’s Sacking

Frank Lampard and John Terry have shed more light on the emotional scenes inside Chelsea’s dressing room following José Mourinho’s first departure from Stamford Bridge in 2007.

Mourinho’s exit came suddenly in September 2007, shortly after Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Rosenborg in their opening Champions League fixture. The decision stunned a squad that had grown accustomed to winning under the Portuguese manager.

In just three years, Mourinho had turned Chelsea into a dominant force in English football, guiding the club to consecutive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006, as well as an FA Cup and two League Cups.

His relationship with the players was equally significant. Senior figures including Lampard, Terry and Didier Drogba had developed a strong personal bond with the manager, making his departure particularly painful.

Reports from the time described an emotional farewell at Chelsea’s training ground. As Mourinho said goodbye to his players, the atmosphere reportedly became overwhelming, with Lampard and Drogba among those reduced to tears. Lampard was even said to have withdrawn briefly to the showers to regain his composure.

Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell later recalled the extraordinary reaction in the squad, saying he witnessed Drogba and Terry struggling to contain their emotions. The players, he said, were shocked by the decision because they believed Mourinho still had their full backing.

For Terry, the connection with Mourinho went far beyond football. The defender had become Chelsea captain during the manager’s first spell and played a central role in the club’s trophy-laden era. He has since spoken of the extraordinary loyalty he felt towards Mourinho and the lengths he would have gone to for his manager.

Terry also credited Mourinho with creating a powerful team mentality. The Portuguese coach, according to the former captain, built an environment in which players felt united, motivated and capable of conquering English football.

Mourinho’s departure brought an abrupt end to one of Chelsea’s most successful eras, but the reaction inside the dressing room demonstrated that his influence extended beyond tactics, titles and trophies.

His eventual return to Stamford Bridge for a second spell only strengthened the bond between Mourinho, Chelsea and the supporters. Yet the tearful scenes surrounding his first exit remain a defining reminder of the deep connection he forged with the players he led.
