AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana To Play In Nigeria As CAF Rejects Home Stadium

The Confederation of African Football has rejected Ghana’s home venue, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, and chosen a stadium in Nigeria for their remaining 2025 Africa Cup of Nations home qualifiers.

According to multiple reports in the West African country, the rejection of the stadium comes after CAF’s inspection team had deemed the stadium unsuitable for competitive matches flagging the major structural concerns, including poor drainage, uneven playing surfaces, and uneven grass cover.

Currently, the country is left without an approved stadium for its upcoming qualifiers as the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums have failed to meet CAF’s standards.

CAF has directed Ghana to secure an alternative venue for crucial Matchday three and four ties in October outside the country.

After concluding on the option, the most likely option, given its proximity is the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria.

Currently serving as the home ground for the Super Eagles, the stadium has 30,000 capacity.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Stade de la Paix, Cameroon’s Japoma Stadium in Douala, and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco are the other options still under consideration.

The final decision for the Ghana Football Association is expected to be announced within the coming days.
