Today, August 23, the world is observing the 2022 edition of the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
It is specially meant to memorialise the shameful practice against millions of innocent lives who were the victims of the transatlantic slave trade during colonial rule.
One of the activities that makes this day unique is the occurrence of several cultural events and debates take place across the world.
Going memory lane, the Slave trade which was a common practice in the imperialist regimes of the European nations has this day given its first importance by UNESCO.
The significance of this day is to engrave the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of the loss of lives of millions of individuals.
This year’s edition has the theme: ‘Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism’.
It’s a time to remember that humans from the African and Asian countries were traded to be slaves of the colonial rule in Haiti, the Caribbean and other locations across the globe. The international slave trade was first eradicated in the year 1807.
