William Henry Fox Talbot’s Historical Photographs To Fetch Almost $2M

William Henry Fox Talbot Images To Be Auctioned

One of history’s first photographers, William Henry Fox Talbot, is having his collection of 200 images auctioned for an estimate of over $1.95 million.

The value of the photographs has been disclosed by Sotheby’s auction house; referring to them as “arguably the most important lot of 19th century photographs to ever come to market.”

Interestingly, they have not only disclosed how viable the value is, but have gone extra mile to hand the sale, CNN reports.

On the analysis of the value, the images depict indoor and outdoor scenes, spanning architecture, botany and daily life in the 1840s.

Talbot, an English scientist and inventor who experimented with his pioneering camera technology, also produced various portraits of family members and friends.

Offered at auction as a single lot, the collection comprised over 70 loose photographs and three albums of printed images.

It also included rare versions of Talbot’s publication “Sun Pictures in Scotland” which documents his travels through Scotland, as well as several parts of his celebrated work “The Pencil of Nature.”
