Ukrainian authorities have confirmed the seizure of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in the country by Russian forces.
The plant which is known as the largest in Europe and the ninth largest in the world was seized after an attack on it through shelling.
According to officials, the site is now safe after the fire was extinguished from the plant which is located in south-east Ukraine in Enerhodar on the banks of the Kakhovka reservoir on the Dnieper River.
The attack Western powers have condemned Russia for what they called a “horrific” and “reckless” act.
Since the war in Ukraine started, several attempts have been made by Russian forces on some cities and Kherson in southern Ukraine has been seized while consistent attack the strategic port city of Mariupol is ongoing.
As the war continues around Ukraine, the invasion has affected the country on three fronts – the north, east, and south.
Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is about 200km from the contested Donbas region and 550km south-east of Kyiv, with six reactors, each generating 950MW, and a total output of 5,700MW, enough energy for roughly 4m homes.
In normal times it produces one-fifth of Ukraine’s electricity and almost half the energy generated by the country’s nuclear power facilities.
