Temi Otedola Proudly Owns ‘Nepo Baby’ Label

Nigerian actress, fashion influencer and entrepreneur Temi Otedola has ignited a fresh wave of conversations around privilege and nepotism after boldly declaring that she has no reason to shy away from being labelled a “nepo baby.”

Speaking during an episode of the How Far? podcast, which she co-hosts with her husband, music star Mr Eazi, Temi said she finds it puzzling when people with privileged backgrounds try to distance themselves from the advantages they inherited.

As the daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, she acknowledged that her upbringing afforded her opportunities many people can only dream of. According to her, privilege goes far beyond having wealthy or famous parents—it also includes access to quality education, financial security, stable living conditions and a strong support system.

Temi argued that there is nothing wrong with admitting those advantages, insisting that honesty is far better than pretending everyone starts life from the same point.

“You’re never going to catch me denying that I’m a nepo baby,” she said. “Why would I? That would be dishonest.”

She explained that nepotism becomes evident when family connections open doors that might otherwise remain closed. To illustrate her point, Temi imagined a future where she and Mr Eazi have a child interested in music, noting that they would naturally be able to connect the child with leading producers, fund recordings and provide industry access from the outset.

For her, acknowledging such opportunities is simply recognising reality—not discrediting personal effort.

Temi was quick to point out that accepting privilege does not mean success comes without hard work. While admitting she benefited from the foundation laid by her family, she maintained that she has dedicated herself to building a career and making the most of the opportunities available to her.

Mr Eazi also weighed into the discussion, saying he considers himself privileged in his own way because of the educational opportunities and supportive environment he enjoyed growing up, despite working to establish himself as one of Africa’s biggest music stars.

Temi’s comments have since fuelled lively discussions across social media, with many praising her candidness and self-awareness, while others reignited the broader debate over privilege, merit and the role of family connections in shaping success.

Her remarks have added a new voice to the ongoing global conversation about whether inherited opportunities should be downplayed or openly acknowledged, with Temi making it clear that, for her, embracing privilege begins with telling the truth.
