Fela Durotoye’s Stand: How I Rejected ₦5 Billion Government Fraud Deal

Renowned leadership coach and former presidential candidate, Fela Durotoye, has opened up about a shocking attempt to lure him into a fraudulent government contract worth ₦5 billion.

At the biannual conference of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria in Abuja, he described the ordeal as a defining moment that tested his commitment to integrity.

A Tempting Offer with a Dark Twist

Durotoye was approached by a government official—who also claimed to be a pastor—with a proposal to conduct an eight-week ethical leadership training program across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. After careful assessment, Durotoye and his team concluded that the project would cost approximately ₦1.3 billion.

However, days later, a call from the presidency changed everything. Officials suggested that ₦1.3 billion was “too small” and urged him to inflate the budget to ₦5 billion, with an agreement to “settle” everyone involved.

A Battle of Principles

Shocked by the blatant attempt at financial misconduct, Durotoye questioned the morality of inflating a budget for a program designed to promote ethical leadership. The official, however, dismissed his concerns, arguing that he was simply “taking his due” for serving the country.

Rather than engage in the illicit scheme, Durotoye made a firm decision: he cut off all communication by switching off his phone. Three months later, several presidency officials were arrested by the EFCC for embezzling ₦426 million from an ethical leadership training fund.

Turning Down Government Perks

Reflecting on his brief stint in government, Durotoye revealed that he refused all official benefits, including a car, housing, and salary. His unwavering stance against corruption made it difficult for anyone to associate him with misconduct.

Despite the widespread corruption he witnessed, Durotoye also highlighted that there were individuals within the system who remained committed to integrity—proof that honest leadership is still possible in Nigeria’s governance.

A Lesson in Leadership

Fela Durotoye’s refusal to compromise his values, even when offered a multi-billion naira payout, serves as a powerful message about the importance of integrity in leadership. His story resonates as a call for accountability and a reminder that true leadership is defined not by wealth or power, but by unwavering principles.
