Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala ‘Makes Final Shortlist’ In WTO Leadership Bid

Dr. Ngozi Iweala Okonjo

Nigeria’s candidate for the job of the head of World Trade Oganization Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has made the list of the last two candidates.

According to BBC, the two candidates who are women emerged from five candidates on the shortlist.

Interestingly, the WTO has never been led by a woman or an African-but this time, Yoo Myung-he of South Korea and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala have emerged as candidate for the job.

Since the continent has stagnated at 2% to 3% of the global average there is hope that having an African head the organisation could boost the continent’s trade.

The successful candidate is expected to be announced next month.

On the area of focus of the job, the US-China trade dispute and increased global protectionism are the areas that the new director general will have to deal with.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s administration has also blocked the appointment of judges to the WTO’s main dispute body, badly impairing one of the organisation’s key functions.
