Barcelona’s opening game of the new LaLiga season carried an emotional touch, with the Catalan giants choosing the occasion to honour basketball icon Kobe Bryant.
Instead of their traditional home colours, Barcelona stepped onto the Martínez Valero pitch in their Kobe Bryant-inspired away kit during their 5-0 victory over Elche.
The timing made the gesture even more poignant. The match was played on August 23, the date Bryant would have celebrated his 48th birthday.
Bryant’s connection with Barcelona was never merely symbolic. The five-time NBA champion was a well-known admirer of the club and frequently expressed his love for football. He also maintained close links with several Barcelona stars during his lifetime.
The 2026/27 away jersey was created through Barcelona’s collaboration with the Kobe Bryant brand and Nike, drawing inspiration from the late Lakers legend’s sporting identity.
The design features a dark snakeskin-inspired pattern, an iridescent Barcelona crest and the Kobe logo. Inside the collar is Bryant’s powerful message: “Leave the game better than you found it.”
The black-and-purple colour scheme is another deliberate nod to Bryant’s legendary Los Angeles Lakers career.
Barcelona’s decision to wear the shirt in their first competitive fixture of the season therefore transformed the kit into something more meaningful than an alternative strip. It became a tribute to an athlete whose influence extended well beyond basketball.
On the pitch, the players delivered a performance worthy of the occasion.
Raphinha put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot before Hansi Flick’s side continued to dominate Elche, eventually completing a convincing 5-0 victory.
The result gave Barça the perfect start to their title defence, but the significance of the evening went beyond the scoreline.
Bryant’s famous Mamba Mentality, built around discipline, resilience, relentless improvement and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence, has long resonated with athletes across different sports.
His admiration for Barcelona was also well documented, with Bryant famously crossing paths with club legends including Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi.
By choosing Bryant-inspired colours for their LaLiga opener, Barcelona celebrated that enduring connection while carrying one of his most recognisable philosophies onto the football pitch.
The message was simple but powerful: compete relentlessly, keep improving and leave the game better than you found it.
