A new lawsuit has been filed by American rapper, Megan Thee Stallion against her record label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, concerning a row about what constitutes an album.
Something For Thee Hotties, her 2021 release which was classed as a mixtape triggered the dispute, BBC reports.
On performance, in its first week of release, it debuted at number three on the US Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Megan’s team have made it clear on the matter that the release “clearly meets the definition of “Album””. This was contained in the lawsuit, filed on Friday.
Meanwhile, in document seen by Radio 1 Newsbeat, it says 1501 wants to “tie [Megan] down” for its own “financial benefit”.
Considering the point of view of the legal team, there are signs that her label wants to make profit from her sales and it could only be achieved if they keep her locked in her contract for longer.
Meanwhile, record deals are usually signed with an agreement of how many albums the artist will release before they can renegotiate or leave the label.
