Boris Johnson Set To Resign As Party Leader

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson has agreed to resign as Conservative leader on Thursday, following ministerial resignations on the same day.

This development occurred after some Tory Members Parliament called for him to stand down immediately, since more than 50 government ministers and aides quit his government.

On other reasons for the call for him to stand down, Labour leader, Keir Starmer who welcomed the news revealed that the Conservatives have “inflicted chaos upon the country” during a cost of living crisis.

Interestingly, newly-appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi also told him to his face that he should step down.

Foreign secretary, Liz Truss who has remained silent for days is cutting short a foreign trip and returning to London.

Meanwhile, Johnson is planning to continue to serve as prime minister until the autumn to allow a Tory leadership contest to take place in the summer.

New Education Secretary, Michelle Donelan and Northern Ireland Secretary, Brandon Lewis have already resigned from the cabinet.

Johnson stays on as caretaker prime minister until October, with a new Conservative leader set to be installed in time for the party’s annual conference.

Johnson will also make a statement to the country on Thursday.
