Ukraine Set To Be Approved As EU Candidate

Ukraine is set to be approved as an EU candidate after the European Commission gave permission to proceed.

This development occurred after a Brussels summit on Thursday, which European leaders back E.U. candidate status for the war-torn country.

The process has since moved at a record speed following Ukraine’s application days after the Russian invasion in February, BBC reports.

Speaking to BBC, the ambassador to the EU Vsevolod Chentsov who admitted “real integration” could only start when the war was over, also said it would be a psychological boost for Ukrainians.

On the procedure for joining EU which takes many years, candidate status is the first official step towards EU membership and France said this week, there was “total consensus” on Ukraine.

In some cases, it takes more than a decade, just like western Balkan countries of Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia have been candidate countries for years.

Meanwhile, countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina have applied for candidacy in 2016 but have still not succeeded.

With so much concern, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky has pleaded for special consideration, but the idea has been backed by some member states and strongly opposed by others.
